Japanese is spoken by the 120 million inhabitants
of Japan and by people of Japanese origin living in Australia,
Hawaii and North and South America. The Japanese language is written
with a combination of three different types of scripts: modified
Chinese characters called kanji, and two syllabic scripts made
up of modified Chinese characters, hiragana and katakana. The
Latin alphabet is also often used in modern Japanese, especially
for company names and logos, advertising and when entering Japanese
text into a computer.
Numerous Japanese dialects are spoken throughout
the four main islands, the smaller islands of Okinawa and other
Japanese islands. Some dialects are virtually incomprehensible
to the speakers of other dialects, requiring the use of the standard
dialect for communication. The two dialect families with the largest
number of speakers are the dialect spoken in and around Tokyo,
which is equivalent to the "common" dialect, and the
dialects of the Kansai region spoken in western Japan, in cities
such as Kyoto, Osaka, and Kobe. Due to the spread of the common
dialect through television and radio, most Japanese outside the
Tokyo region speak the common dialect as well as the dialect of
their area.

and the translator’s country of residence, which is particularly
important for commercial/promotional translations. We ensure that
a Japanese translation will read as well or even better than the
source document by carefully assigning the most appropriate translator
to the project; fluency in the latest cultural and business terminology
for your target audience is essential. All of our Japanese translators
are certified in their native language and hold current membership
of professional associations such as NAATI. Furthermore, all of
our Japanese translations undergo proofreading to ensure accuracy.
Japanese to English and English to Japanese typesetting considerations
When translating from one language to another,
the volume of text will either increase or decrease. This expansion
and contraction will vary depending upon subject matter. English
to Japanese translation often results in a 25-60% decrease in
text. Accordingly, Japanese to English translations will decrease
the volume of text by approximately 25-60%.
Japanese is traditionally written vertically,
with the lines starting from the right side of the page. Japanese
can also be written horizontally from the top left hand side,
as with the English language. For the translation of promotional
material, such as brochures, we tend to use horizontal copy flow.
There are no other significant typesetting considerations to be
made when preparing copy for translation from English to Japanese.
